Congratulations to John Dalton and Gwynfor Jones for their fantastic performance throughout the weekend. Finishing 2nd overall and first two wheel drive in their Darrian T90 GTR+. A fantastic result and their best ever Rali Ceredigion finish!
It was a hectic and difficult couple of weeks between the Mewla Rally and Rali Ceredigion. The Mewla showed that John and Gwynfor certainly had the speed with them setting fastest time on the second stage. Unfortunately that was as far as they got as they had to retire at the end of the stage because a core plug had fallen out of the engine and all the water was lost!
The engine had to come out and go back to Millingtons who did an amazing job to turn it around and get it back to us in time to get to Rali Ceredigion. Thank you to Julian and all the team at Millingtons for getting that done so quickly for us.
No time for testing, the car and engine were great, all ready to go. Then, just on the way to the ceremonial start, the clutch release bearing seized. Beware of counterfeit parts from China! John managed to get back to the service area and there was an hour between the ceremonial start and stage 1. The gearbox came out, a new clutch release went in, everything went back together and off they went to the proper start of the rally. After that thankfully things went a little smoother!
John and Gwynfor settled in to second place on Saturday morning with their times being close to rally leaders, and current Protyre National Asphalt champions, Sam Touzel and Max Freeman. John and Gwynfor dropped a bit of time on some stages but there were a couple of stages where they finished on the same second!
Sunday would be another challenge with the weather turning wet. John and Gwynfor already had a significant margin to third place behind them and on the first loop they were very quick as they were on the right tyres at the right time when the rain came. From there it was just a case of doing enough to keep their second place, no risks. They ended the day in 2nd overall with a comfortable margin to third.
The icing on the cake was that three Darrians started the rally and three finished. Tony Davies and Martin Davies finished in 30th place and 5th in class, in their Darrian T9, gaining a lot of good experience on closed roads.
Sean Crowley and Sam Weller, in the Darrian T90, finished an excellent 13th overall and 3rd in their class.
What an event! Massive thank you to the Rali Ceredigion organising team for all their hard work in making this rally a huge success. See you again next year.
